What Are Telescopes?

Telescopes act as windows to the universe. It is with the help of telescopes that we can study the solar system and view the conjunctions of stars. Not just that, the various planets, galaxies, satellites and asteroids that we get to see only in the books and magazines are made more familiar to us via the telescopes. Eyepiece- this is a very important piece of equipment and its absence can render a telescope useless. Eyepieces come in a variety of sizes and if you add more than one eyepiece to your telescopes then you can have the pleasure of viewing even the tiniest and distant objects with clarity.

Mounts- Mounts are the stands for telescopes. It is a mount on which the telescope rests. Since a telescope wont function favorably in vibrations therefore you should ensure that it is placed on a stable mount.

Barlow lens- A Barlow lens helps in the magnification of telescopes. These lenses are available in different sizes and we must be careful in choosing the size that best fits the eyepiece.

There are two main types of telescopes, the refractor (Galileo) telescopes and the reflector (Newton) telescopes. The refractor telescope uses an objective lens that bends the light towards the eyepiece. While the reflector telescope uses a mirror, which collects the light and then directs it towards the eyepiece.

Though both the refractors as well as the reflector telescopes are easily available in the market we should take the following points into consideration before buying a telescope.

Do not get impressed by the magnification of the telescopes. This is because magnification alone is of no use if it just produces large but hazy images.

Aperture- This is the most important factor while deciding on a telescope. Aperture is the opening that collects light so its important to choose a telescope with a larger aperture that will ensure a clearer and a more detailed image quality.

Resolution- This enables the telescopes to produce a more detailed image. So always opt for a telescope, which has a higher resolution. Moreover since resolution is also determined by the aperture, therefore the larger the aperture the better the resolution.

Focal length- The distance between the optical center of the lens or the mirror and the optical center of the eyepiece is known as the focal length. The focal length is what determines the magnification in telescopes. Larger focal lengths imply more magnification.

If we are careful about remembering the above points then it wont take us long to choose a telescope the next time we want to buy one for ourselves.

Earthly dust may seem insignificant and trivial but the cosmic kind is an all important constituent of matter in the universe and is essential to the star making process. The famous Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) represents a dark cloud of dust and non-luminous gas which obscures and silhouettes the emitted light of IC 434 behind it. IC 434 has in turn received all its energy from the bright star Sigma Orionis. Protruding from its parental cloud, the horsehead is really a dynamic structure and a fascinating laboratory of complex physics. As it expands into the surrounding environment areas of the cloud sustain stresses which trigger the formation of low mass stars. One infant star is visible as a partly shrouded glow in horse's brow. Small reddish objects glowing through the dust represent Herbig-Haro objects, light emission of material ejected from invisible protostars.

The surrounding region also contains a multitude of different objects all unique in their own right. The bright emission nebula in the lower left is NGC 2024 (the flame nebula). Infrared studies have revealed a huge cluster of infant stars hidden behind the dust and gas of NGC 2024. The bright blue reflection nebula to the lower left of the Horsehead is NGC 2023. Interstellar dust reveals its presence by blocking light emitted from stars or nebulae behind it. Dust is composed mostly of carbon, silicon, oxygen and some heavier elements. Even organic compounds have been detected.

These shape-shifting galaxies have taken on the form of a giant mask. The icy blue eyes are actually the cores of two merging galaxies, called NGC 2207 and IC 2163, and the mask is their spiral arms. The false-colored image consists of infrared data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope (red) and visible data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (blue/green).

NGC 2207 and IC 2163 met and began a sort of gravitational tango about 40 million years ago. The two galaxies are tugging at each other, stimulating new stars to form. Eventually, this cosmic ball will come to an end, when the galaxies meld into one. The dancing duo is located 140 million light-years away in the Canis Major constellation.

The infrared data from Spitzer highlight the galaxies' dusty regions, while the visible data from Hubble indicates starlight. In the Hubble-only image (not pictured here), the dusty regions appear as dark lanes.

The Hubble data correspond to light with wavelengths of .44 and .55 microns (blue and green, respectively). The Spitzer data represent light of 8 microns.

Creating Your Own Telescope

Materials that you will need: Magnifying glass, Masking tape, Flashlight, Thin piece of paper, a pair of reading glass with low numbers Cheap Telescope, yardstick, and an assistant Astronomy Magazine Kids Telescope.
Tape the reading glasses to the yardstick making sure one lens is out on the side.
Place the flashlight on a stand about twelve feet away. Shine the light at the lens that is sticking out.
Place the thin sheet of paper on the side across from the flashlight Meade Telescope. Walk away from the paper until you see Camera Review a small picture of the flashlight on the paper.
Tell your assistant take the paper to the focal point. Go around to the back side of the paper and check the image in your magnifying glass. Adjust until the image from the flashlight is enlarged.

Achromatic refractors occupy a middle ground between 60mm beginner scopes and premium-priced Apochromatic refractors.

Refractors are known for their sharp, high-contrast views of the moon and planets, and the Firstscope 90 includes everything you need to get sharp views of the moon right out of the box. The low-power 20mm eyepiece (50x) shows a nice overall view of the moon, while the 10mm eyepiece (100x) can be used to zoom in for more detail. When the quarter moon is in the sky, I like to look for detail along the "terminator," the dramatic boundary between bright sunlight and dark shadow.

Brighter deep-space objects also show up nicely in the Firstscope 90. On a moonless night, I like the way the 20mm eyepiece frames the ghostly glow of the Orion nebula. Zooming in with the 10mm eyepiece, I can easily pick out all four stars of the Orion nebula's embedded multiple star, the Trapezium. The moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn are easy to see with the 10mm eyepiece (100x). With careful focusing, I was even able to detect the Cassini division in Saturn's rings using my own Ultima 7.5mm eyepiece. Low-cost refractors like the Firstscope 90 can be troubled by false color and spherical aberration, but I find these effects are well controlled at moderate powers. When I look at Jupiter and Saturn at magnifications over 100x however, the images are not as sharp as the ones I see with my C102HD refractor.

The equatorial mount included with the Firstscope 90EQ is designed to track stars and planets. When I set up the telescope, I simply point the polar axis at Polaris, the North Star. This allows me to keep celestial objects in view by turning one slow-motion knob, and an optional motor drive is available for hands-free tracking. Celestron also offers the Firstscope 90AZ, which is the same telescope with an alt-azimuth mount. The standard equipment Kellner eyepieces are just average quality; I'd add a 32mm plossl like the one in Celestron's optional accessory kit to bring out the full view of deep space highlights like the Pleiades. You'll also want some star charts to help find planets and star clusters; I like the monthly star charts and viewing tips in Night Sky magazine. --Jeff Phillips

Galileo's Glassworks: The Telescope and the Mirror

The Dutch telescope and the Italian scientist Galileo have long enjoyed a durable connection in the popular mind--so much so that it seems this simple glass instrument transformed a rather modest middle-aged scholar into the bold icon of the Copernican Revolution. And yet the extraordinary speed with which the telescope changed the course of Galileo's life and early modern astronomy obscures the astronomer's own curiously delayed encounter with the instrument. This book considers the lapse between the telescope's creation in The Hague in 1608 and Galileo's alleged acquaintance with such news ten months later. In an inquiry into scientific and cultural history, Eileen Reeves explores two fundamental questions of intellectual accountability: what did Galileo know of the invention of the telescope, and when did he know it?

The record suggests that Galileo, like several of his peers, initially misunderstood the basic design of the telescope. In seeking to explain the gap between the telescope's emergence and the alleged date of the astronomer's acquaintance with it, Reeves explores how and why information about the telescope was transmitted, suppressed, or misconstrued in the process. Her revised version of events, rejecting the usual explanations of silence and idleness, is a revealing account of the role that misprision, error, and preconception play in the advancement of science.

Along the way, Reeves offers a revised chronology of Galileo's life in a critical period and, more generally, shows how documents typically outside the scope of early modern natural philosophy--medieval romances, travel literature, and idle speculations--relate to two crucial events in the history of science.
