Amateur astronomers have been taking great pictures of the moon and planets by using modified Webcams. The favored Webcams for astro-imaging have been the hard-to-find Philips ToUCam and Vesta models because of their high-performance CCD chips. Now Celestron's Neximage puts the same CCD technology in a package that's ready to use with any telescope that accepts 1.25-inch eyepieces. The NexImage includes an anodized metal nosepiece that fits in a 1.25-inch eyepiece holder. When I installed the Windows based software, I also updated my Windows Media Player files. Then I simply plugged the NexImage into my computers' USB port, and I was ready to start taking pictures.

The NexImage CCD is sensitive enough that I can take "snapshots" of the Moon or Sunspots (always use a safe Solar filter, of course!) even without a motor-driven telescope. The real power of the NexImage package, however, comes from its included Registax software which automatically aligns and stacks hundreds of individual AVI video frames into one sharp, highly detailed picture.

I used my 8-inch Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (similar to the Nexstar 8 GPS ) and my 2x Ultima Barlow lens to capture some beautiful pictures of Jupiter and Saturn. The sensitive Sony CCD chip in the NexImage easily shows color and detail on Jupiter that just doesn't show up when I use CMOS-based Webcams.

The fine performance of the NexImage package is limited somewhat by its included video capture software. The AmCap software doesn't give me the precise control of exposure times I'd like; I wasn't able to photograph the moon Callisto next to Jupiter, for instance, without overexposing the planet. Celestron doesn't mention the other little drawback in its ads. You'll have so much fun that your hard drive will start filling up with pictures and AVIs! --Jeff Phillips

The Sun provides amateur astronomers with one of the few opportunities for daytime astronomy.

In order to see the major features of our nearest star, special telescopes that have a very narrow visible bandwidth are essential. The bandwidth has to be as narrow as 1 × 10^-10 m (1 Angstrom) and centred on the absorption line of neutral hydrogen. This makes many major features of the Suns chromosphere visible to the observer. Such narrow-band "Fabry-Perot etalon filters" are high technology, and until the introduction of the Coronado range of solar telescopes, were too expensive for amateur use. The entry-level Coronado telescope, the PST (Personal Solar Telescope) costs under $500.

Solar prominences (vast columns of plasma, best seen at the edge of the solar disk), filaments, flares, sunspots, plage and active regions are all visible and can be imaged to produce spectacular solar photographs. Philip Pugh has assembled a team of contributors who show just how much solar work can be done with Coronado telescopes, and explain how to get the best from these marvellous instruments.

V noci ze 14. na 15. května 2008 jsem pořizoval své první snímky Měsíce na dalekohledu Meade 12" LX200GPS s připojenou LPI kamerou. Po zacvičení Tomášem Hynkem (thynek.wz.cz) jsem se pustil do experimentování... Podařilo se mi pořídit na pět set záběrů našeho nejbližšího souseda, které teď postupně probírám a pokouším se zpracovat. Telescope Mounts

Mounts for telescopes are used for several different reasons. You don't have to hold the scope yourself while you are trying to focus on an object. It helps to steady the scope. It frees you hands up so you can make sketches of what you are viewing or adjust the scope for Bushnell Binoculars better focus.
There are two types of telescope mounts you can employ for better viewing. One is the Alt-Azimuth. This mount is similar to a camera tripod. It uses the vertical (altitude) axis and a horizontal (azimuth) axis to help you locate your object. This type of telescope mount has two variations. The Ball and Socket which has a ball shaped end that can move freely. The Planetarium second type is called a Rocker Box. This is usually made of plywood and has a low center of gravity. It has a horizontal circular base and Teflon ball bearings for the altitude axis. These are great mounts for Sextant a heavier Space Lx200 telescope.
The second type of telescope mount is called the Equatorial Bushnell. This mount uses two axes that are lined up with the poles to keep track of the motion an object takes across the sky. The axes can be Right Ascension, Polar, or Declination Stars. Instead of moving up and down on its axes like the Alt-Azimuth, this particular mount is tilted toward the Earth's axis of rotation. There are two varieties of this particular mount. One is the German Equatorial Mount. This mount is shaped like a T. The longer axis of the T is lined up with the pole of the Earth. The second variety is the Fork Mount. This is amount that is aligned with the Earth's pole but is like a two-pronged Brass Telescopes fork that sits on a wedge. The prongs are one axis and the base of the fork is the other. You can use the Equatorial Mounts for taking pictures of the objects Planets you find.
