What are Telescopes and its Benefit?

A telescope "telescope" is an instrument designed for the observation of remote objects. The term usually refers to optical telescopes, but there are telescopes for most of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation and for other signal types. An optical telescope is an optical tool that gathers and focuses electromagnetic radiation. Telescopes increase the apparent angular size of distant objects, as well as their apparent brightness. Telescopes work by employing one or more curved optical elements - lenses or mirrors - to gather light or other electromagnetic radiation and bring that light or radiation to a focus, where the image can be observed, photographed or studied. Optical telescopes are used for astronomy and in many non-astronomical instruments.
The main purpose of a telescope is to gather light, i.e. to collect and focus photons. We can think of a telescope then as a "light bucket" - the bigger the bucket, the more photons a telescope can collect.



Types of telescopes:

There are three basic types of telescopes -- Refractors, Newtonian reflectors, and Catadioptrics.

Newtonian Reflector Telescopes:

Newtonians usually use a concave parabolic primary mirror to collect and focus incoming light onto a flat secondary mirror that in turn reflects the image out of an opening at the side of the main tube and into the eyepiece

Refractor Telescopes:

Refracting telescopes have an objective lens at the front of the tube. The light exits out through the back of the tube to the eyepiece. Since many observations are made high in the sky, a right-angle diagonal is used to avoid neck strain. This also provides an upright image making them suitable for terrestrial observations. A refractor has several advantages over other designs. The tubes are enclosed so that dust and moisture do not enter the tube, they have fixed optics that do not normally require collimation, and they do not have a central obstruction which reduces the light entering the tube. A refractor typically will give higher quality images of planets than other telescopes of similar aperture.

Catadioptric Telescopes:

Telescopes using a combination of both mirrors and lenses are called catadioptrics. There are many different designs. Examples of these are the Schmidt-Cass grain and the Maksutov-Cassegrain. Usually a full aperture lens is used to correct aberrations in a compound reflecting telescope. The corrector lens also increases the performance of the instrument as air currents are eliminated. The main advantage of the design is that, because the light path is folded back on itself, it provides a very portable, short physical length telescope with a long focal length.

Benefit:

1. The aperture of a telescope is several times larger than the aperture of human eye so that the objects that can not be normally seen by unaided eye can be seen. Light- gathering power of a telescope is proportional to the area of its aperture and hence depends on the square of the radius of the mirror. Therefore a 20 cm diameter telescope collects four times more photons than a 10 cm diameter telescope.

2. A telescope can be equipped to record light over a long period of time, by using photographic film or electronic detectors such as photometers or CCD detectors while the eye has no capability to store light. A long-exposure photograph taken through a telescope reveals objects too faint to be seen with the eye, even by looking through the same telescope.

3. A third major advantage of large telescopes is that they have superior resolution, the ability to discern fine detail. Small resolution is good. The resolution is directly proportional to the wavelength being observed and inversely proportional to the diameter of the telescope.

are the three main types of telescopes. All these
different types have the same purpose, but each
telescope design does it differently. Collecting
light and bringing it to a point of focus so it can be
magnified and examined with an eyepiece is their
goal.

Of the different types of telescopes the refractor
is the telescope most people think of when they
think of astronomy. This type of astronomy telescope
is easy to use and reliable due to the simplicity
of design. It requires little or no maintenance. Its
great for looking at the different types of lunar,
planetary, and binary stars.

Newtonians are a type of telescope, which is also
known as catoptrics. This type is different from
the other telescopes because it has the lowest
per inch of aperture compared to refractors and
Catadioptrics, because lenses are more expensive
to produce than mirrors, especially in medium
to large apertures. Newtonians deliver very bright
images and are low in optical aberrations.

Catadoptric telescopes are the most popular type
of instrument, with the most modern design,
marketed throughout the world in 3 1/2 and larger
apertures. Its very good for looking at different
planetary, lunar, and binary stars. If you like to

school districts were often at a great disadvantage when it
came to subjects being offered. A small school district
sometimes didn't have the resources to attract teachers
that were in high demand.

Math, science and foreign language classes were often
limited because of this shortage. Today, distance learning
and elearning have changed the way school districts
determine class schedules, making many more opportunities
available to students.

Public schools have changed dramatically over the past
century and a great number of those changes can be put down
to two factors - state and federal mandates governing the
classes that must be offered and requirements for
graduation, and (of course) the ever-increasing world of
technology.

Computers have made the world a global neighborhood in
which anyone can instantly communicate with those from
another country, even if that country is half way around
the world. Language and time differences are virtually the
only barriers. This means that distance learning and
elearning are a part of the curriculum of many schools.

As schools began to connect to the Internet, the immediate
concern in most cases was how to regulate the use. The next
was how to best use the technology to benefit school
districts and students. Distance learning and elearning
became the way to provide options, especially in those
rural districts that couldn't meet state mandates.

Consider the situation of many smaller, rural schools. If
the school is required to offer a foreign language but
can't recruit a teacher, what should happen to that school?
Forced consolidations have been common in some states.
Students lost the benefits of schools in their own towns
and faced long bus rides to new districts.

With distance learning and elearning, more schools can meet
the state and federal mandates to offer specific classes.

Consider yet another situation. A smaller district has four
students who show great promise in their math studies and
it's quickly apparent that they could go well beyond the
normal math classes offered in high school.

There's no one on the teaching staff capable of teaching
those advanced concepts and it's financially impossible to
hire someone for that task alone. Distance learning or e-
earning could provide those classes.

Special needs children are another group to greatly benefit
from distance learning and elearning. While many issues can
only be dealt with between teacher and student, face-to-
face, there are many things that can be taught and learned
online.

Whether the subject of distance learning or elearning is a
foreign language or sign language, and whether the class or
courses are being offered to one student or the entire
student body, distance learning and elearning have become
an important tool for many public schools.

Celestron's NexStar 5 SE computerized telescope combines excellent optics and easy computerized GoTo tracking in a convenient portable size. The standard equipment tripod and mount feature easy no-tool setup, and the package even includes a student version of "The Sky" planetarium software for your computer.

The excellent optics of Celestron's classic C5 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope have been updated with premium Starbright XLT optical coatings. This telescope consistently delivers crisp, high contrast views of the moon, the planets, and brighter deep space objects. The standard equipment 25mm plossl eyepiece produces a magnification of 50x, powerful enough to show the rings of Saturn, the cloud bands of Jupiter, and the changing face of the Lunar disk. Optional eyepieces can be added to bring out significantly more detail. I like to use a 12.5mm plossl (100x magnification) or a 7.5mm Ultrascopic eyepiece (166x) for high power views of the planets. With the 7.5mm Ultrascopic eyepiece I can usually see the Cassini Division in Saturn's rings and cloud bands on the planet itself. I like to use a 32mm plossl eyepiece for great low power views of deep space highlights like the Orion Nebula or the Double Cluster in Perseus.

The NexStar 5 SE package also includes a sturdy adjustable tripod, a motorized alt-azimuth mount, and the NexStar hand held computer controller. You won't need a GPS receiver or star charts to operate this telescope. The SkyAlign procedure is easy to use, and experienced observers will like the two-star align and solar-system align options because they are even quicker to set up. The steel tripod and alt-azimuth mount provide a solid base for the NexStar 5 SE. Vibration is not a problem, even while focusing at high power. The computerized tracking is also very good, easily keeping planets in the field of a high power eyepiece. The disadvantage of a computerized telescope, of course, is battery consumption. I like to use a rechargeable Celestron Power Tank because the standard AA alkaline batteries only last a few hours.

This telescope is perfect for visual observing, and allowed me to capture some sweet images of the moon and planets using a Celestron NexImage web-cam. For long exposure deep space photography, however, I'd take a look at Celestron's Advanced Series equatorial telescopes such as the C6 N-GT --Jeff Phillips

Choosing Your Telescope Eyepieces

When beginning astronomers start looking at telescopes, one of the least understood aspects of these optical instruments are simple telescope eyepieces. While lenses and mirrors and designs are easy to grasp, the actual eyepiece itself can be somewhat confusing. However, they are vital parts of the telescope, as they provide the final creation and magnification of the telescope image and they are the one part of the telescope that spends its time in almost constant contact with the person using it. All of which means that telescope eyepieces are important considerations when putting together a telescope.

When looking at telescope eyepieces, remember that you are essentially paying for the lenses in the eyepiece. The more an eyepiece costs, the better the lenses inside and the better the image it creates. And, because the rest of the telescope is only as good as the image that reaches the user?s eye, it is well worth the while to invest a little extra in the eyepieces to be used on a good telescope.

It is also good to remember that image quality of telescope eyepieces can be affected by the design of the eyepiece. For instance, Huygens eyepieces can create chromatic aberrations, Erfle eyepieces can produce some ghost images, and Plossl eyepieces tend to have some astigmatism around the edges of the image. So, when choosing eyepieces, it is also a good idea to understand the limits of each design and what sort of work each design is suited to.

Another aspect to consider when choosing telescope eyepieces is the apparent field of view. This is the apparent width of the image, in degrees, which indicates how far a person needs to move their eye in order to look from one end of the image to the other. Essentially, it is a measure of the peripheral vision available to the person looking through the eyepiece. Depending on the design of the telescope eyepiece, the apparent field of view can range from 40 to 82 degrees. Obviously, the narrower fields of view give the feeling of looking down a tunnel, making it more difficult to scan the sky and find objects.

However, the field of view and image clarity are not the only concerns with telescope eyepieces. A major, but often overlooked, trait is that of eye relief. This is the distance between the eye and the actual lens surface and it is vital that people understand its importance. After all, this can affect the person using the telescope by simply making it uncomfortable or difficult to use the telescope. If someone doesn?t have room to wear their glasses when they look through the eyepiece, or their eyelashes rub against the lens, it is simply not worth the effort to use the telescope. And if someone?s eyelashes are rubbing against the lens, it is transferring dust and oils to the lens, degrading the image and, in fact, making the telescope less effective. Of course, the only way to really find the right eye relief is to try out several telescope eyepieces and see which ones feel right.

Overall, telescope eyepieces are best judged through experience, which means that trying out several designs and models is the best way to figure out what works best. But, with a little trial and error, the right telescope eyepieces can make their way into your telescope kit.

Celestron's NexImage combines a sensitive CCD imaging device with powerful image processing software in one affordable package. Now anyone with a telescope can take pictures that are simply amazing.

Amateur astronomers have been taking great pictures of the moon and planets by using modified Webcams. The favored Webcams for astro-imaging have been the hard-to-find Philips ToUCam and Vesta models because of their high-performance CCD chips. Now Celestron's Neximage puts the same CCD technology in a package that's ready to use with any telescope that accepts 1.25-inch eyepieces. The NexImage includes an anodized metal nosepiece that fits in a 1.25-inch eyepiece holder. When I installed the Windows based software, I also updated my Windows Media Player files. Then I simply plugged the NexImage into my computers' USB port, and I was ready to start taking pictures.

The NexImage CCD is sensitive enough that I can take "snapshots" of the Moon or Sunspots (always use a safe Solar filter, of course!) even without a motor-driven telescope. The real power of the NexImage package, however, comes from its included Registax software which automatically aligns and stacks hundreds of individual AVI video frames into one sharp, highly detailed picture.

I used my 8-inch Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (similar to the Nexstar 8 GPS ) and my 2x Ultima Barlow lens to capture some beautiful pictures of Jupiter and Saturn. The sensitive Sony CCD chip in the NexImage easily shows color and detail on Jupiter that just doesn't show up when I use CMOS-based Webcams.

The fine performance of the NexImage package is limited somewhat by its included video capture software. The AmCap software doesn't give me the precise control of exposure times I'd like; I wasn't able to photograph the moon Callisto next to Jupiter, for instance, without overexposing the planet. Celestron doesn't mention the other little drawback in its ads. You'll have so much fun that your hard drive will start filling up with pictures and AVIs! --Jeff Phillips

The Hubble Space Telescope has beamed spectacular images of faraway galaxies and stars to Earth since it was launched into orbit in 1990. Now, British scientists are developing the X-ray Evolving Universe Spectroscopy (XEUS), which will steal Hubble's title as the largest telescope in space when it's launched within the next 10 years.

Of all the articles that I have written, I consider this article of space telescope to be my best article. Hope you feel the same too.

Buying a Telescope?

What an experience you have ahead of you if you are choosing a telescope to look at the night sky!

But even if you want a telescope for other purposes, it is important to gather a few facts about telescopes first so you know what to look for when you buy.

Types of telescope

Essentially there are two types of telescope:

1. A refractor telescope ? that?s the ?traditional? type of telescope which has a lens at the front, a tube for the body, and an eyepiece at the other end.
2. A reflector telescope ? which has an open end and a mirror at the other which directs the image to another mirror and then directs that to the eyepiece

Which should you go for?

Well, if price is important, then generally speaking you will get better ?value for money? with a reflector telescope. But purists will claim that you will get a better quality image with a refractor. So, if you can, try each out and make your decision.

Buying tips

DON?T be sold on magnification! Ads and salesmen will talk about so many hundred times magnification. That?s not the most important factor at all ? too much magnification often only succeeds in giving you a more blurred image!

What counts is the amount of light collected by the telescope ? and that depends on the size of the lens or the mirror (as a rule of thumb, multiply the diameter of the objective by 2.5, and you?ll get an idea of the magnification possible).

And don?t skimp on the tripod and mountings; make sure they are solid and steady. When you are looking at a distant object at high magnification, a wobbly tripod is not something that you want!

If you can afford it:

Go for a GoTo telescope. What?s that? Well you align it with several known objects in the sky, and then you can find just about anything else with a supplied remote control ? saves hours of time and frustration.

Or go one step further and invest in a GPS telescope ? using the same principle of satellite navigation used in cars, this will find any known object in the night sky for you!

Final word of warning

DON?T under any circumstances, point your telescope at the sun ? ever. The damage you can inflict on your sight is unbelievable. Do not be tempted ? just don?t do it!

Although it is no longer uncharted land, the origin of the dark territory of Cassini Regio on Iapetus remains a mystery. Also puzzling is the equatorial ridge that bisects this terrain, and how it fits into the story of the moon's strange brightness dichotomy. The ridge is seen here, curving along the lower left edge of Iapetus.

The view looks down onto the northern hemisphere of Iapetus (1,468 kilometers, or 912 miles across), and shows terrain on the moon's leading hemisphere.

The image was taken in polarized green light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Nov. 12, 2005 at a distance of approximately 417,000 kilometers (259,000 miles) from Iapetus and at a Sun-Iapetus-spacecraft, or phase, angle of 95 degrees. Image scale is about 2 kilometers (1 mile) per pixel.

Orion's Skyquest XT4.5 is the smallest in their Dobsonian line of telescopes that includes the B00020WZB0 XT6 , XT8 , and XT10. Newcomers to the hobby are always surprised at how large amateur telescopes are, but to experienced observers, this XT4.5 is considered a very small scope. Tiny, in fact (It's so small, astronomers are buying them just because they think they're so cute). Make no mistake, though--the XT4.5 is a full-fledged telescope, and is a serious observing tool that could last you for years.

Your money buys you a lot in this case. Included are a good-quality 4.5" f/8 primary mirror, two eyepieces, a finder, and a CD-ROM with a stripped-down version of The Sky, a software guide to the sky. The scope comes in two cartons. One contains the optical tube, and the other is a flat-packed box containing the base, which you assemble yourself. Orion includes all the hardware and tools you need, and the instructions are well written. Allocate about 30 minutes to assemble and align everything.

There are a couple of cost-cutting measures. The primary mirror is spherical, not parabolic (this is not likely to affect the views, however). Also, the focuser is plastic. While I've never seen one break, plastic focusers are by nature less robust than metal ones. Finally (and this may be the most serious concern of all), the scope is a little short for an adult. The eyepiece is only 3 feet off the ground, which may force you to stoop over (hint: try sitting on a short chair or stool while observing). On the other hand, the height is ideal for a child, and as a result, I heartily recommend this telescope for children.

Under the stars, the XT4.5 exhibits excellent performance. Once properly collimated (aligned), the optics give clear, sharp, contrasty views. I've spent enjoyable nights using these telescopes, both as a teaching tool and by myself. Jupiter's cloud band and four moons are no problem to see, nor are Saturn's rings. The Orion Nebula is a glowing fan of green gas, with a quartet of tiny stars at its core. Under dark skies (and with some diligence) the XT4.5 can even pull in some of the fainter deep sky objects, like the brighter galaxies in the Virgo Cluster.

Despite the fact that I have a garage full of expensive telescopes, I never feel compromised with any of Orion's XT scopes. As recently as a few years ago, the old adage regarding telescopes was that you must spend at least $300 to avoid buying junk. While this is still mostly true, Orion's little XT4.5 breaks the price barrier in a big way. As long as you can deal with the short eyepiece height, it's a great starter scope.
